sacrifice rituals
Ceremonial giving up
Sacrifice rituals are ceremonial acts in which something valuable—often an animal, food, or in some cultures historically, a human life—is offered to a deity, spirit, or sacred force.
The sacrifice may be killed, burned, or otherwise destroyed to transfer it from the human realm to the divine.
Such rituals appear across nearly all religious traditions, from ancient Aztec human sacrifice to Jewish temple offerings to contemporary animal sacrifice in Santería.
The underlying logic varies: appeasing angry gods, expressing gratitude, seeking favor, or maintaining cosmic order.
The harvest sacrifice ritual ensured the gods would bring rain.
