sacred narrative

Religious origin tale

A sacred narrative is a story held to be spiritually true and significant by a religious or cultural community—creation myths, accounts of divine intervention, stories of prophets and heroes.

Unlike secular folklore, sacred narratives carry authority and often shape ritual, ethics, and worldview: The Exodus is a sacred narrative central to Jewish identity.

The term allows discussion of religious stories without asserting or denying their literal truth.
