rimmed out
Orbited then escaped
Rimmed out describes a basketball shot that circles the rim but fails to drop through the net.
The ball catches the edge, teases going in, then spins out.
The term extends to near-misses generally: I rimmed out on that job interview—made it to the final round but didn't get the offer.
