reserve champion
Almost took first
Reserve champion is the competitor that places second to the grand champion, typically at livestock shows, dog shows, or other competitive exhibitions.
The reserve champion wins if the grand champion is disqualified or otherwise unable to fulfill duties: Her heifer took reserve champion at the county fair.
The title acknowledges excellence while distinguishing it from the top honor.
