red shell
Seeking racing weapon
A red shell is a homing projectile in the Mario Kart video game series that seeks out and hits the racer ahead of the player who fires it.
Unlike green shells, which travel in straight lines, red shells track their target automatically.
The term sometimes appears figuratively for any attack or setback that comes from behind just as you're about to succeed: I was so close to the promotion, then got red-shelled by a bad quarterly review.
