red caps

Railroad baggage handlers

Red caps are porters at railroad stations, named for the red caps they traditionally wore to be easily identified by travelers needing help with luggage.

The term evokes an earlier era of train travel when such attendants were common at major stations.

In folklore, redcaps are malevolent goblins said to haunt ruined castles along the Anglo-Scottish border.
