red bone marrow
Hematopoietic spongy tissue
Red bone marrow is the soft, blood-producing tissue found inside certain bones, particularly in the skull, vertebrae, ribs, and pelvis.
It manufactures red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets.
In children, red marrow fills most bones; in adults, much of it converts to yellow marrow, which stores fat.
The biopsy sampled red bone marrow from her hip.
