red blend
Blended dark wine
A red blend is a wine made by combining two or more red grape varieties, as opposed to a varietal wine made from a single grape.
The term appears frequently on wine labels when the blend doesn't qualify for a specific regional designation like Bordeaux or Chianti: I picked up a nice California red blend for dinner.
Blending allows winemakers to balance flavors—one grape might contribute tannins, another fruit, another body.
