recon teams
Forward observation units
Recon teams are small military or tactical units sent ahead to gather intelligence about enemy positions, terrain, or conditions.
Short for reconnaissance teams, they operate covertly to observe and report back without engaging: The recon team spotted enemy movement along the ridge.
The term extends to any advance group scouting a situation: We sent a recon team to check out the venue before the event.
