rapid strep test
Quick bacterial diagnosis
A rapid strep test is a quick diagnostic test that detects group A streptococcus bacteria in a throat swab, typically returning results within minutes.
It's commonly performed in doctors' offices when strep throat is suspected: The rapid strep test came back positive, so they started her on antibiotics right away.
A negative result is sometimes followed by a throat culture for confirmation.
