quote mining
Deceptive partial citation
Quote mining is extracting fragments from someone's statements in ways that misrepresent their actual meaning or position.
The practice involves selectively quoting to make a source appear to support a claim they would reject in full context: Creationists quote-mined Darwin to make him seem to doubt evolution.
Common in political attack ads and propaganda.
