queen cell
Monarch larva chamber
A queen cell is a specialized cell in a honeybee hive where a new queen develops.
Larger than ordinary cells and shaped like a peanut, queen cells hang vertically from the comb.
Workers build them when preparing to swarm, replace a failing queen, or respond to the sudden loss of their queen: The beekeeper spotted several queen cells and knew the hive was preparing to swarm.
