pussy willow
Soft spring shrub
Pussy willow refers to certain willow shrubs or small trees, especially *Salix caprea* and *Salix discolor*, known for their soft, furry catkins that appear in early spring before the leaves.
The silvery-gray catkins resemble tiny cats' paws—hence the name.
Children often gather pussy willow branches as a sign of spring: We brought pussy willows home from the creek.
