purple drank
Cough syrup cocktail
Purple drank is a recreational drug mixture of prescription cough syrup containing codeine and promethazine, combined with a soft drink and often hard candy.
Named for its typical color, it originated in Houston hip-hop culture and spread through rap lyrics in the 1990s and 2000s.
Also called lean, sizzurp, or dirty Sprite.
The drink produces a sedated, euphoric high and carries serious health risks including respiratory depression and addiction.
