proofreader's mark
Manuscript correction notation
Proofreader's marks are standardized symbols used to indicate corrections on written or typeset material.
A caret (^) signals an insertion, a deletion line strikes through unwanted text, and specialized marks indicate transpositions, capitalization changes, or spacing adjustments.
Though digital editing has reduced their use, they remain standard in publishing: The manuscript came back covered in proofreader's marks.
