poverty gap
Rich-poor income difference
The poverty gap measures how far below the poverty line poor people actually fall—the difference between the poverty threshold and the average income of those living in poverty.
A country might have a low poverty rate but a deep poverty gap, meaning its poor are extremely poor.
The poverty gap widened during the recession as incomes at the bottom dropped further.
Economists use it to assess not just how many people are poor, but how poor they are.
