postal zone
Mail sorting area
A postal zone is a numbered district within a city used to sort and route mail, the precursor to modern ZIP codes in the United States.
Major American cities adopted zone numbers in the 1940s to speed delivery: Chicago 12, Illinois.
The system was replaced by five-digit ZIP codes in 1963, though the zone number often became the final two digits.
