poor boy

Long stuffed roll

A poor boy is a submarine sandwich, the term used especially in Louisiana and the Gulf Coast region.

The classic New Orleans poor boy (also spelled po'boy) features fried seafood or roast beef on crusty French bread.

The name supposedly comes from free sandwiches given to striking streetcar workers—"poor boys"—in 1929.

Outside this context, poor boy simply describes someone lacking money: He was just a poor boy from the wrong side of town.
