policewomen

Women in blue

Policewomen is the plural of policewoman—female members of a police force.

The term was more common when women in law enforcement were rare enough to warrant distinction: The department hired its first policewomen in 1968.

Today, gender-neutral terms like police officers are standard, though policewomen still appears when sex is relevant to the discussion.
