plugging up

Stopping the flow

Plugging up is blocking or stopping a hole, gap, or passage—the progressive form of plug up.

You plug up a leak, a drain, or a crack in the wall.

The phrase often describes unwanted blockage: My sinuses are all plugged up.

It can also mean filling a gap figuratively: We're plugging up holes in the budget.
