place holder

Reserves a spot

A place holder (also placeholder) is something that temporarily occupies a position until the intended thing arrives.

In documents, a place holder marks where content will go: The designer used lorem ipsum as a place holder for the final copy.

In competitions, a place holder reserves a spot.

People can serve as place holders too—interim appointments holding positions until permanent selections are made.
