pinball wizard

Arcade machine virtuoso

A pinball wizard is someone exceptionally skilled at pinball, the arcade game where players use flippers to keep a metal ball in play.

The phrase comes from The Who's 1969 rock opera *Tommy*, about a deaf, dumb, and blind boy who becomes a pinball champion.

It now describes anyone with remarkable skill at a game or activity: He's a pinball wizard at the office fantasy football league.
