pick a card

Conjurer's opening request

Pick a card is the classic instruction from a magician or card sharp inviting someone to select a card from a fanned deck, usually followed by "any card." The phrase evokes sleight-of-hand tricks and stage magic: Pick a card, any card—don't show me.

It can be used figuratively for any situation where someone is asked to make a choice from options that may be manipulated or equivalent.
