piano pedal

Damper control lever

A piano pedal is one of the foot-operated levers at the base of a piano that modify the instrument's sound.

The sustain pedal (rightmost) lifts all dampers, allowing notes to ring; the soft pedal (leftmost) reduces volume; the sostenuto pedal (middle, on grand pianos) sustains only selected notes.

She held the piano pedal down through the final chord.
