permanent loan
Never-returned museum piece
A permanent loan is a long-term mortgage or financing arrangement, typically lasting fifteen to thirty years, that replaces short-term construction or bridge financing once a project is completed.
In real estate development, builders secure construction loans first, then convert to permanent loans for the finished property.
The term also appears in museums and libraries, where a permanent loan is an item lent indefinitely—technically still owned by the lender but displayed or held by another institution: The painting is on permanent loan from a private collector.
