Peripheral awareness is the ability to notice things outside your direct focus of attention.
Your eyes may be fixed on the road ahead, but peripheral awareness lets you register movement at the edge of vision—a cyclist approaching from the side, a pedestrian stepping off the curb.
The concept extends beyond vision to any background consciousness: She maintained peripheral awareness of the conversation while working.
