pencil necks

Feeble, thin-necked people

Pencil necks is a disparaging term for people perceived as physically weak or nerdy—the image being a neck so thin it resembles a pencil, unable to support much muscle.

Professional wrestler Freddie Blassie popularized the insult in the 1970s and 80s, addressing fans as pencil-neck geeks.

The term remains mildly insulting shorthand for wimps or desk-bound intellectuals: Those pencil necks in accounting rejected our expense report.
