parentified
Child bearing burdens
Parentified describes a child who has been forced into a parental role, taking on caregiving responsibilities for siblings or even for their own parents.
The term comes from family therapy and describes a form of role reversal: She was parentified early, managing the household while her mother struggled with addiction.
A parentified child may appear mature but often carries lasting emotional burdens from shouldering adult responsibilities too young.
