breach of promise
Reneged wedding commitment
Breach of promise is the failure to fulfill a pledge, especially a promise to marry.
Historically, a jilted fiancé could sue for breach of promise, seeking damages for the broken engagement: She filed a breach of promise suit when he called off the wedding.
Such lawsuits have largely disappeared from modern law.
