oyster roast
Coastal bivalve gathering
An oyster roast is a social gathering, common in coastal Southern states, where oysters are cooked over an open fire or steamer and eaten communally.
The oysters are typically shoveled onto a large table covered with newspapers, and guests shuck and eat them on the spot: We're hosting an oyster roast this weekend.
The event is as much about the gathering as the food.
