once removed

One generation apart

Once removed describes a family relationship separated by one generation.

Your first cousin once removed is either your first cousin's child or your parent's first cousin—the "once removed" indicates you and that relative are not in the same generational line.

My father's cousin is my first cousin once removed.

Twice removed means a two-generation gap, and so on.

The phrase causes confusion because it can refer to relatives either older or younger than you.
