off-Broadway productions
Intimate theater shows
Off-Broadway productions are professional theatrical performances in New York City staged in smaller venues than the major Broadway theaters—typically seating 100 to 499 people.
The designation reflects venue size and union contracts rather than quality or location.
Off-Broadway offers an alternative to Broadway's commercial pressures, often showcasing experimental work, new playwrights, or revivals: The play started off-Broadway before transferring to a larger house.
Still smaller venues are called off-off-Broadway.
