observation balloons
Floating surveillance platforms
Observation balloons are tethered aircraft used for military reconnaissance, positioned high above battlefields to spot enemy movements and direct artillery fire.
They were prominent in World War I, when crews in wicker baskets scanned trenches from precarious heights: The observation balloon was a prime target for enemy pilots.
The technology was largely superseded by aircraft.
