oblique reference
Sideways verbal nod
An oblique reference is an indirect or sideways allusion to something, mentioning it without stating it directly.
Rather than naming a subject outright, an oblique reference approaches it at an angle—through implication, euphemism, or coded language: She made an oblique reference to his failed marriage.
The technique allows speakers to communicate sensitive matters while maintaining plausible deniability or tact.
