nut cracking
Opening hard seeds
Nut cracking is the act of breaking open a nut's hard shell to reach the edible kernel inside.
The term applies to both human activity—using a nutcracker or hammer—and animal behavior, as when crows drop walnuts onto pavement or chimpanzees use stones as tools.
The satisfying nut cracking gave way to picking out the meat.
