nostalgia goggles
Memory's flattering filter
Nostalgia goggles are the imaginary lenses through which people view the past more favorably than it deserves.
The metaphor suggests distorted vision—someone wearing nostalgia goggles remembers childhood cartoons, old video games, or former decades as better than they actually were: Take off the nostalgia goggles—that movie was always terrible.
