nontenured
Lacking job security
Nontenured describes academic positions that lack the job security of tenure.
A nontenured professor or faculty member can be dismissed more easily than their tenured colleagues, typically serving on contracts that must be periodically renewed.
The term applies both to those on the tenure track who haven't yet achieved tenure and to adjunct or visiting positions that offer no path to tenure at all.
Most nontenured faculty teach heavy course loads for modest pay.
