non-com
Corporal or sergeant
Non-com is military slang for a noncommissioned officer—an enlisted person who holds rank through promotion rather than a commission.
Sergeants and corporals are non-coms; lieutenants and captains are not.
The non-coms kept the platoon running while officers planned strategy.
