noise-cancelling

Blocking outside sounds

Noise-cancelling describes technology, typically in headphones or earbuds, that actively reduces unwanted ambient sound.

The device uses microphones to detect external noise and generates sound waves that are the inverse of the detected noise, effectively cancelling it out.

This differs from passive noise isolation, which simply blocks sound through physical barriers.

My noise-cancelling headphones made the flight bearable.

The technology is especially valued for travel, concentration in noisy environments, and audio quality.
