neutral corner

Unassigned ring section

In boxing, a neutral corner is one of the two corners not assigned to either fighter.

When a boxer scores a knockdown, the referee directs them to a neutral corner while counting.

The term extends figuratively to any position of nonalignment or impartiality: I'm staying in the neutral corner on this family dispute.
