nepheline syenite
Alkaline ignite rock
Nepheline syenite is an ignite rock similar to granite but containing the mineral nepheline instead of quartz.
It forms from magma that cools slowly underground and is used industrially in glassmaking and ceramics, where it acts as a flux to lower melting temperatures.
The rock appears in geological formations worldwide, often alongside other alkaline igneous rocks.
