name search

Finding someone's identity

A name search is the process of checking whether a particular name—typically for a business, trademark, or domain—is already in use or legally available.

Before registering a company or launching a product, you conduct a name search to avoid conflicts: The lawyer ran a name search before we incorporated.

Name searches also refer to looking up a person by name in databases or records: A name search turned up three prior addresses.
