mud puppies
Gilled water dwellers
Mud puppies are large aquatic salamanders native to eastern North America, named for a squeaking sound they supposedly make when handled.
They retain their feathery external gills throughout life, never leaving the water.
The name also applies informally to other salamander species or, colloquially, to children who come home covered in mud.
