mission trip
Charitable travel abroad
A mission trip is a journey, typically short-term, where people travel to provide religious outreach, humanitarian aid, or community service, usually in economically disadvantaged areas.
Most common among Christian groups, participants might build houses, run medical clinics, or conduct religious education: Our youth group is going on a mission trip to Guatemala this summer.
Critics sometimes question whether such trips benefit the travelers' spiritual growth more than the communities they visit.
