missing women
Disappeared ladies, unsolved cases
Missing women refers to the statistical gap between expected and actual female populations in certain regions, caused by sex-selective abortion, female infanticide, or neglect of girls.
Economist Amartya Sen coined the term to describe tens of millions of women "missing" from demographics in parts of Asia and North Africa.
The phrase also describes cases of murdered or disappeared women whose cases receive inadequate attention: the missing and murdered Indigenous women crisis.
