mental pain

Distress of mind

Mental pain is suffering that occurs in the mind rather than the body—the anguish of grief, rejection, humiliation, or despair.

Unlike physical pain, it leaves no visible wound but can be equally debilitating: The mental pain of losing her was worse than any injury.

Mental pain often accompanies depression, trauma, and loss, and may manifest physically as tightness in the chest or difficulty breathing.
