memorial quilts
Sewn tribute blankets
Memorial quilts are quilts made to commemorate the dead, often incorporating fabric from the deceased person's clothing or featuring squares dedicated to individual people.
The AIDS Memorial Quilt, begun in 1987, brought the form to wide attention—each panel honoring someone lost to the epidemic.
Memorial quilts serve as both grief work and collective remembrance: She's making a memorial quilt from her father's old shirts.
