macroburst

Wide atmospheric plunge

A macroburst is a powerful downdraft of air from a thunderstorm that spreads outward upon hitting the ground, producing damaging winds across an area more than 2.5 miles wide.

Distinguished from microbursts by scale, macrobursts can flatten trees and structures in patterns that mimic tornado damage: Investigators determined the destruction was caused by a macroburst, not a tornado.
