lying in

Staying in bed

Lying in is resting in bed, especially for an extended period.

The phrase most often refers to the traditional confinement period after childbirth, when a new mother remained in bed to recover: She spent two weeks lying in after the delivery.

The practice has largely disappeared from modern Western medicine, but the term persists in historical contexts.
