Dull and shapeless
Lumpen describes people at the bottom of the social order—those disconnected from productive work and class consciousness.
From Marxist theory's *lumpenproletariat*, it now applies more loosely to anyone seen as crude, unthinking, or culturally degraded: lumpen masses, lumpen tastes.
The word carries intellectual disdain, suggesting people too disorganized or debased to be a meaningful political force.
